A mysterious logo for an isolated ’80s mining town buried deep in the mountains of Northern British Columbia.
Kitsault was an isolated ’80s mining town buried deep in the mountains of Northern British Columbia. The town, built almost overnight, was home to hundreds of miners and their families. When Kitsault’s mine suddenly closed, everyone was forced to leave and the town was abandoned just as quickly as it was built. To this day Kitsault remains the world’s best-preserved ghost town and it’s story is being told through Kitsault: A New Canadian Musical.
The creators of the show asked me to design a wordmark logo which would emphasize the nostalgic feeling of an 1980s mining town. I created a custom wordmark using a classic serif typeface with parts of the letters missing to reflect the idea of abandonment. The project continued with other promotional materials including a poster, postcards, and a digital movie theatre slide. An image of a foggy forest, contrasted with dramatic highlights & shadows, was selected to accentuate the feeling of this secluded Northern B.C. ghost-town. Overall, the materials come together to promote this new musical in a manner that’s intriguing and helps to tell the story of this forgotten Canadian town.
