Dr. McClelland is a Socio-Legal Researcher & Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at uOttawa’s Department of Criminology. This book reports on the outcomes of his research study examining the experiences of people living with HIV who were threatened or prosecuted with criminal charges.

As the first study of its kind, the design challenge was to create a book which stood out from other HIV-related materials which typically have a health focus, use red as the primary colour, & ribbons as the primary visual element.

I chose a colour palette of charcoal, blue, and yellow. The contrast of blue and yellow against charcoal creates a serious but engaging tone. Imagery included in HIV research materials often further stigmatizes people living with HIV. To reduce the potential stigmatization, Dr. McClelland commissioned Eric Kostiuk Williams to illustrate the stories while maintaining the confidentiality of the story-tellers.

The colour palette, illustrations, & clean typesetting create a memorable booklet outlining Dr. McClelland’s important work.
